Secretary, Board of Trustees.
In a decisive move aimed at maintaining stability and ensuring effective governance within the Igbo community, the Board of Trustees - the highest decision making body of United Igbo Elders Council Worldwide (UNIEC) - is set to appoint a pre-tempore national executive. This decision comes in light of inadequate arrangements and logistical challenges faced ahead of the proposed elections slated for later this month.
At a press conference held at the Council’s headquarters, the Director General, His Lordship, Justice Alpha Ikpeama expressed concern over the lack of proper planning and coordination that has plagued the election preparations. "We have observed a regrettable lack of adequate arrangements concerning the February elections. The welfare and representation of our people cannot be compromised by unpreparedness or disorganization," he stated; issuing a call for nominations to fill a wide range of offices in accordance with the allocation formula to the states.
Justice Ikpeama further explained that the pre-tempore executive would serve as a transitional body, tasked with ensuring that the Council's objectives are met while more permanent leadership solutions are refined and established.
"This council has a mandate to support the unity and progress of the Igbo people across the globe. It is our responsibility to act in the best interests of our community during these turbulent times," he noted.
The decision to appoint a pre-tempore executive reflects the Council's broader commitment to democratic principles while acknowledging the pressing realities of the current situation. The newly appointed body will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations, facilitating intra-community dialogue, and preparing for a more structured election when feasible arrangements can be assured.
This declaration is sure to draw mixed reactions from members of the community. While some will commend the Elders Council for taking proactive measures, others may voice concerns about the implications of such an appointment on the democratic process.
The BOT respects such diverse opinions and assures all and sundry that we are not circumventing the democratic rights of our people during this crucial time.
The pre-tempore executive will include a diverse group of representatives aimed at ensuring a fair and inclusive approach to leadership. The Council has called for greater engagement from the community and transparency in its operations as it navigates these challenges. With significant concerns around voter disenfranchisement due to inadequate election preparations, the UNIEC aims to reassure constituents that their interests will remain at the forefront.
As the Council gears up for this interim phase, it remains hopeful that a well-structured and participatory electoral process will soon follow. For now, the focus is on maintaining stability and unity within the Igbo community until conditions allow for a fair election.
