United Igbo Elders Congress Demands Unconditional Release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu
UNITED IGBO ELDERS CONGRESS WORLDWIDE (UNIEC)
Press Statement on the Unconditional Release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu
The United Igbo Elders Congress Worldwide (UNIEC) has watched with grave concern the continued unlawful detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), despite several competent court judgments ordering his release. It is both a tragedy and a national embarrassment that the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria continues to act in open defiance of the rule of law.
We categorically demand the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Anything short of this is a deliberate provocation, a calculated act of injustice, and a stain on Nigeria’s democracy.
We ask, in all sincerity and firmness:
If confirmed terrorists and bandits are being released, compensated, and rehabilitated in this country, why is Mazi Nnamdi Kanu still languishing in prison?
This selective application of justice reeks of bias, ethnic discrimination, and a flagrant disregard for equity. It further exposes the contradictions of a government that claims to uphold national unity while willfully alienating and oppressing one section of the country.
Let it be clearly stated: The Igbo nation is not begging for favors; we are demanding justice. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not a convicted criminal. He is a political prisoner whose continued incarceration has become both unlawful and indefensible.
We call upon the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the National Assembly, the Judiciary, and the international community to intervene immediately. Nigeria cannot continue to trample upon the rights of its citizens without consequences.
Enough is enough. Justice delayed is justice denied. The world is watching, and history will not forgive those who perpetuate injustice against an innocent man.
